Marcel goes USA weblog
14:09 5-12-2006
For the past few months I have been preparing for one of the greatest adventures in my life. Spring 2007 I will go to Washington DC in the United States of America to perform my intership and finalize by master study in BioMedical Engineering. Since the preperations only will bring me a lot of adventures I've decided to already start writing in a special weblog. This weblog will eventually tell the whole story of my visit to the United States. You can find it here: Marcel goes USA weblog.
Best Online One Day Offers!
22:56 30-11-2006
The latest internet hype most definitely concerns webshops that sell only a small selection of product over a limited period of time for fairly low prices. So, I thought it would be nice to publish a list with the most important websites in this category.
- www.iBOOD.nl - Internet's Best Online Offer Daily.
- www.priceattack.nl - Telkens drie artikelen voor een stuntprijs.
- www.dilly.nl - Your daily deals! - Dagelijks de beste aanbiedingen.
- www.iToko.nl - iToko One Day One Offer! Elke dag een aanbieding!
- www.1dayfly.nl - 1 DAY FLY - elke dag een superaanbieding
- www.100stuks.nl - Iedere dag om 12:00 uur een nieuwe waanzinnige aanbieding!

Google Custom Search Engines
19:09 26-10-2006
As part of the Co-op platform, Google has recently launched a an application that enables people to create specialized Custom Search Engines that reflect peoples own interests. You can place it on your own website. More information can be found on the special Google website. I've added a searchbox to this post that searches in Computer stores in Groningen and contains the following websites:- http://www.norrod.nl/
- http://www.funprice.nl/
This is the result Google offers after editing some looks: (Update: I have disabled the form, sorry.)
Flower 4 ports USB hub
11:52 10-10-2006
It took quite some time before it got delivered, the quality isn't far to good, but... this is really hilarious. Not only does the built in USB 2.0 hub enable you to connect multiple appliances to your computer, it looks like a flower and it opens and closes when you use it! That will surely put a smile on your face! At least , for as long you can handle the awefull noise that the mechanically driven flower leaves produce.
IBM out, Wester Digital in
22:02 6-6-2006
After years of good service, my good old IBM 2,5" mobile harddisk needed to be replaced. It was continuously going into parking position, indicating that something was going really wrong inside. Besides, 10GB of storage started to become a problem too. So, I made up my mind rather quick for a change and ordered a nice 80GB Western Digital Scorpio WD800VE. After a couple of days my pretty new harddisk arrived. After mounting it to my Digiconnect mobile harddisk enclosure I was shocked! There was nothing... not the slightest sound... after some serious doubts about the hardisk, and about my own cognitive capabilities there was only one conclusion possible: Western Digital has reached the ultimate form of silence achievable in harddisk technology.
Biomedical Engineers continued
21:35 19-5-2006
Today I've made some great progress in the design of the new biomedical engineers website. The domain www.biomedicalengineers.nl has already been has already received great attention from large amounts of visitors. Now, the website only contains few descriptions of students and some pictures taken at one of the courses. In the following weeks more information will be added to the website.
Faculty Party 2006 - The Cell
19:28 19-4-2006
Melior Vita has put some pictures on their website of the party that was held by the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the "platform theater" on the 6th of April. You can check out the crazy party pictures at: Melior Vita
Biomedical Engineers
17:38 16-4-2006
Lately I've been working on a new website for me and my fellow students. It will be a website for BioMedical Engineers from the Netherlands. While the domain name www.biomedicalengineers.nl has already been registered, the waiting is for a nice design. The image here roughly gives a preview of the design of the website. The website will be database driven by means of Joomla.
Sweex Motion Tracking Webcam
20:29 21-3-2006
Over the past months I have been using a webcam setup to monitor the test setup at work while sitting at home. I kept thinking that it would be nice to see who was constantly bumping against the camera just out of sight of the camera. I decided to look for a webcam that could be controlled over internet. Then I found the Sweex Motion Tracking Webcam. The people at CityPC promised me that I could remote control the webcam over Internet. After cycling back and forth through heavy wind and rain I came home with a nicely package webcam. In the packaging I found an awful looking webcam. That, however, was something I already knew. So, I was hoping to find some nice software to make up for the price. Though, after installing every program on the CD, I had to conclude that I simply wasn't able to control the webcam over internet. Sometimes even controlling it by my own computer wouldn't work. The controls would be messed up, pressing left would make the camera go right. I asked the guys at CityPC for a solution. They told me that it was surely possible to control the webcam over internet, but they didn't know how... Of course I returned this wonderful product to the shop, and thanked them for their great service.
Tonight I ordered the Logitech Sphere, and I already found the good software too. So, more problems or fun to come?
Iriver U10
22:01 4-3-2006
This week Fernando finally received his present: the Iriver U10. We ordered it as a present for his promotion last June and now it has finally been delivered. This picture shows the U10 in its cradle. If you wanna see more of it, visit Fernando's website. He has made quite some pictures, and has promised us he will even write a review.
Park Avenue
19:15 22-2-2006
Last weekend I went to the Park Avenue. party in Hoorn. I had a wonderfull time. It had been a long time since I had a night long with plane old housemusic. Especially the performance of DJ Marcella was absolutely great. You should check out her website and have a good listen to "stabbing sally".
Martin Luther King school Purmerend
22:21 26-1-2006
I almost forgot to inform you all about the recent finishing of the website of the Martin Luther King school Purmerend. The Martin Luther King school is a school for special education in Purmerend, the Netherlands. The website uses ASP for the dynamic content and make use of frames. "Frames?" you would probable ask. Yes, frames! The website was made to fulfil the requirement to be fully manageable through HTML programming. To reduce effort in case the menu has to change, I have chosen for a frameset. Looking at the search results from google and taking into account the browser compatibility I really need someone to tell me why I should not use frames.
Browsershots
11:53 15-1-2006
Browsershots.org helps you improve the browser compatibility of your website. Having multiple machines with different and older operating systems and browsers is not feasible for everyone. Browsershots.org is an online service that offers screenshots of websites in different browsers, operating systems and screen resolutions for free. Everyone can add a url to the queue on a central server. Volunteers use a small program to automatically make screenshots of web pages in their browser and upload the results to the server. It's great!
Technical problems
13:24 10-1-2006
Because I have changed my hosting provider, you might experience some technical problems while browsing through my website. I hope to finish solving all the problems as soon as possible.
Hosting at godaddy
15:38 09-1-2006
After I had found out the cheep prices of major hosting providers in the united states, I decided to stop the contract I had at the Dutch hosting provider Mihosnet for quite some years. I selected two candidates for my hosting, namely: Godaddy and 1&1. They both provide 5GB storage and 250GB traffic for an approximate 3 dollar per month.
Because I have always been using the Dutch domain extension that I did not want to cancel I had to split services for the domain name registration and hosting provider.
Thoughts to choose 1&1 as my hosting provider evaporated half-way the registration process when I found out that 1&1 services are only available for citizens of US, Canada, UK, Germany and France.
By the time I found out about this nice detail, I had already chosen to start the domain name transfer. So, I decided to ask for help at their helpdesk by sending an email.
After some hours I lost patience and chose to start registering at Godaddy. Hosting at 1&1 included a free domain name while godaddy didn't. That caused some hesitation, but apparently not enough. After all I still had a domain name I wanted to use.
After filling up the form I paid by credit card. To my surprise the hosting account was activated within a couple of minutes. I received two emails containing all the information I needed. One contained the DNS settings, while the other contained the information I needed to enter the godaddy website. I could browse through the configuration panel and make some alterations in the settings. Uploading files by FTP reminded me to enable passive mode, without was nothing but misery.
I had some troubles accessing the website before DNS settings were set. I assumed I could access the website by simply entering the IP address that was displayed in the configuration panel. I asked godaddy what to do, by sending them an email. The answer was given within the hour. Godaddy hosting accounts are not accessible though IP. So I had to wait until the DNS had taken effect. Within 24 hours all the settings showed good results making the transfer to godaddy a success.
Where to start?
9:05 05-01-2006
During my far too short vacation I've thought of numerous subjects to write about in my weblog. Now I'm back home... I just cant get into the mood for it. But next week you will find some new posts, thats a promise!
