Concepts
This page shows the different concepts I am (or have been) working on. You can take a look or even download and modify them if you want to. Some of the concepts can be slightly dated, please excuse me for that, sometimes I have a shortage on inspiration... If you have any suggestions, please send me an email.
With the testing of the pages I used Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer and Safari.
Concept 27
With this script one can analyse the colors used in a picture.
The script works with 3 basic functions. The function scale is used
to decrease the maximum number of different colors (256Rx256Gx256B=16,7million)
to a more practical maximum of 64 colors (4Rx4Gx4B).
This eases the comparison of output data for different pictures
(it has no effect on parse time) The function getcolor returns the
color for the requested coordinate in the image.
The function colors is the basic loop that uses the function getcolor
for all coordinates in the image.
By using the output variables one can perform a variery of calculations
and show the results in any layout.
My system (Intel Centrino 1,66GHz en 2,5GB memory) with XAMPP versie 1.5.3a needs 1 second for 96x144 pixels (13.824pixels), 5 seconds for 320x480 pixels (153.600pixels) and 69 seconds for 2032x1524pixels (3.096.768pixels).

I took this concept out of the "old box"
I have on my desktop. This is the box where I put the
designs I'm not happy about. Though, this design
repeatedly got my attention. So I diceded to give it
the extra's it needed to get published. I'm
still not happy, but lets call this an emotional decision.

Concept 24
A demonstration of what can be done with Portable Network Graphics (PNG) transparency. Portable Network Graphics has great specs for a webdesigner: it supports gamma correction, smaller file sizes than GIF, loss-less compression, up to 48-bit color, and alpha transparency. Most modern browsers support alpha transparency with PNG, namely: Netscape, Opera and Mozilla. You are problably thinking: "what about IE?" Internet Explorer does display a PNG, but it does not support alpha transparency.
Internet Explorer 5.5+ does support a variety of
visual filters that can be applied to several objects,
like image's. When used to display a PNG, it
allows full alpha transparency support. Thus,
although not all bowsers will understand the code
just as well, this simple hack enables one to
make PNG work in all browsers.

A small tool I programmed in JavaScript. This tool can help you
calculate the time needed to run a certain amount of cycles at a given
frequency. I use it to calculate the time needed to perform a fatigue
test with the tensile test machine at the university.

Concept 22
When I was working on the Javascript driven photo album project, as
described under concept 19, I also started working
on a fully PHP driven photo album. Administrators
can easily upload photos to the root folder. The script automatically
generates a main overview and navigation. It also
requires visitors to login before they can enter the photo album.
Therefore they need to follow a very simple registration process,
only once. To finish the registration process a secret word is required.
This is a feature that enables you to permit only a select group of
people to access your photo album. People can ask for the secret word by email.
A working demonstration version is available and can be
requested by email.

Just another experiment to excite my JavaScript
skills. The website is mainly about a complete JavaScript
webshop, but also contains a formcheck script. I advise you
to check out the shop source code. It is a pleasure to
look at.

Concept 20
A website that clearly does not have any purpouse at all.
Its just another coffee break miracle. Very interesting,
however, is that different browsers show remarkable different
behaviour in handling only few marquees and simple javascripts.

Concept 18
Yesterday I was reading just another (pressed) computer
magazine. They were discussing a simple freeware program
to calculate how much your monthly savings would be, by the
time you retire. It was obvious that they were not really
enthousiastic, so I started programming straightaway.

each day.

Absolute positioning... I keep finding it a big challenge.
In every browser it keeps showing different results. Secondly
this concept shows the magic done by style sheets. The xhtml is
almost the same as the previous ones, like concepts 15, 13 and 10.

Again my good friend Fernando is the inspiration for
a website. He made a wonderfull picture, while sitting in
a bar. The exposure time of the picture was somewhat around
6 seconds, resulting in very nice effect.

theme. But it looks better here, or not?

a website about it.

Concept 10
While the view from the train looks the same every day,
for over three years now, more and more I start making things
just to pass the time. Following concept is made from
Groningen central station to Buitenpost, approximately
20 minutes. Don't like the looks of it... think
about the twenty minutes. Still don't like it...
learn to live with it.

Concept 9
Playing around with absolute and fixed positioning the
following website was created. Does it look familiar?
Think again... it has the same foundation as the
FruitKICK! concept. Again, I kept it quite simple.
Backgrounds are positioned in a way you might think is a bit
chicken, but it does the job perfectly!

Concept 8
Thinking back to the days when I spent days working on experimental javascripts I decided to make a website that would contain some of these scripts. Eventually I kept it quite simple. The background started as 3 different images, but due to large differences in Opera and Mozilla they were merged to one. It also uncovers some strange behavior of Internet Explorer. After resizing the popup to full screen (F11) the settings of the popup get different with respect to the resizability features.
A nice feature that is integrated in this website, is a
script that checks whether the popup was loaded succesfully or not.
If the popup is loaded succesfully the opener.document is changed to
a goodbye page. If something went wrong in loading the popup, the
opener.document is changed to a frameset containing the popup content.
From all browsers only Opera does'nt get the trick, ending up
with two windows showing the website.

And how much effort has to be done to make them look the same?
Opera is the only browser that refuses to give a nice result.
IE and Phoenix look almost the same.
